How We Choose the Yarn at Fluffmade

At Fluffmade, yarn rarely arrives by accident.

Every yarn that enters the studio is chosen because something about it stands out – sometimes it is the softness, sometimes the way the colour unfolds, and sometimes simply that feeling that it will be beautiful to work with from the very first stitch to the last.

As a small studio, we do not aim to stock everything. Instead, we choose carefully and build a collection that feels intentional, where each yarn has a place and a purpose.

Softness always comes first

Before anything else, yarn has to feel right in the hand.

Whether someone knits, crochets or simply enjoys planning a project, texture matters. A yarn can look beautiful in a photo, but if it does not feel pleasant to work with over time, it rarely becomes a favourite.

That is one of the reasons why Winter Quartz has found such a strong place in the studio.

It quickly became clear that customers were drawn not only to the colours, but also to how soft it feels while working with it. Again and again, we hear the same thing: that it is beautiful to handle, smooth to stitch with, and difficult to put down once a project begins.

Colour matters differently in yarn

Colour in yarn is not quite the same as colour in fabric.

A shade may look beautiful on a shelf, but what matters even more is how it behaves row after row – whether it keeps interest, creates calm, or reveals small shifts that make the finished work feel alive.

That is often what we look for when selecting colourways: something that continues to feel beautiful as it unfolds.

Small batches allow us to choose differently

Because Fluffmade is built around small quantities, we can choose yarn in a more selective way.

Rather than filling shelves for the sake of variety, we focus on bringing in yarns that feel distinct – fibres, colours and textures that offer something worth noticing. It is the same approach we take to bringing in tools and notions.

This also means some colourways stay briefly, while others return because they are loved enough to deserve another place in the studio.

Chosen by makers, for makers

Every yarn we bring in is chosen with actual making in mind.

Not only how it looks photographed, but how it behaves once a hook or needle is in hand, how it drapes, how it moves, and whether it invites that feeling every maker knows – wanting to keep going for just one more row.

That is often the simplest test of all: if it makes us want to continue, it usually belongs here.
